Brushing Your Poodle

Brushing a Poodle, whether it be for show or looking glamorous at home, is a developed skill. Correct equipment is a must to get good results. A proper Grooming Table, Pin Brushes, Metal Comb, Coat Conditioning Sprays, a High Speed Blow Dryer, a good Finishing Dryer and proper Slicker Brushes are key to getting the job done. This equipment must be of superior quality and cannot be purchased at the local pet supply. Investment in professional grade equipment is well worth it, as lower-quality equipment will not get the same results, nor will they last. Chances are you’ll end up frustrated and weary.

Bathing your Poodle once every 7 to 10 days is a must. Brushing should be performed every other day in between baths. This is a time-saving maintenance schedule that will save tons of dematting time and keep your Poodle in fantastic condition. Of course coat management is also effected by using a good shampoo and conditioner combination.

Banding the top knots and mane area is also required for keeping coat tangle-free and not suffering damage from breakage.

Growing coat on a Poodle also requires good nutrition with supplementation and a life style that is fun while keeping coat care in mind. Lots of tugging and pulling by other pets is a hindrance and will result in non-optimum coat condition. Show Poodles need to play with human friends or pet friends that are not inclined to grab and pull those valuable locks on the head, ears and back of neck.

Poodles must be trained to lay on the grooming tables both in a Sphinx-like position and on their sides in a relaxed laying position. Start this early when they are puppies and you’ll be have a much easier time.

When brushing a Poodle’s top knot and mane have the poodle on the grooming table in a Sphinx-like position. I start near the tail end and work my way up to the top knot when brushing. I use a good conditioning spray or if the poodle has some matting I use some even more concentrated conditioning spray. The golden rule here is NEVER BRUSH A DRY COAT! I use my long pinned Pin Brush when brushing coat that is not clean or could have some tangles.

Using the Finishing Dryer on a cool, not-too-high air flow setting, I start brushing at the edge of the long coat along the back. It’s a very light touch with a slowed flick of the wrist upward motion as if to sort of gently “pluck” the matts out of the coat. Remember any coat that comes out on the brush means that you are brushing too hard and trying to get through the process too fast. When grooming a Poodle, time is not an issue. You must relax and enjoy the time you are spending with your poodle. The poodles like being groomed if they know you are not stressed and just trying to “get-er-done”.

DE-MATTING

If you run into heavy tangles, take your metal comb and work through the mat starting at the edge using only the end tooth of your comb a tiny bit at a time. Be sure to keep the dryer air flow pointed directly on the area you are working on – the air flow helps to separate the tangles and lets you see that you are making progress. You can also gently separate the big clumps of coat by pulling them apart with your fingers, then continue with your comb and then your Pin Brush. Be sure you have plenty of conditioner on the mat when using this method so you don’t break coat. Brush at the mat, working from the sides of the mat first. You can hold the mat with your other hand so that you get into it with your brush. Brushing in every direction breaks the mat up more efficiently. I never cut mats with my scissors or any other instruments to get through them. If matting is particularly heavy I use a Dematting Comb to break them up further after brushing. When brushing or combing always start with the comb or brush that has the widest space between the teeth then go to a comb or brush that has teeth closer together and so on.

A NOTE ON BRUSHING OUT TANGLES

If the proper technique is used most tangles will just melt away. One thing one must have is faith that the technique works and not get into too much hurry. If your poodle is very tangled then try many short sessions to get the brushing done.

Brushing the sides of your poodle is done basically the same as the instructions above. However the poodle is laying flat on it’s side. This takes training to get a poodle comfortable in this position. Once a poodle learns that they have nothing to fear from being in this oh-so-vulnerable position, they learn to relax and enjoy the attention. My rule is that if I clip or scissor the coat in an area, then it’s ok to use a Slicker Brush to brush through the coat, providing the brushing is done in a gentle manner, not scraping skin or causing skinned areas in the coat from brushing too hard.

Always follow up with your Metal Comb after you have brushed the coat to make sure all tangles are found and handled. Never bathe a matted coat. This will only set the mats and make them much more difficult to brush out.

Okay, so you’re now ready to bathe your Poodle! Well Done!

Jacki and Anja Win Again

Jacki and Anja Win Again and this time its in the news. Yesterday, Jacki and Anja were in Torrance at the South Bay Kennel Club’s AKC All-Breed Dog Show. There were lots of Standard Poodles among the other breeds competing. Anja walked out of the ring with another point for her career, escalating Admiration higher in the rankings of show Poodles.

Jacki remarked, “It was loads of fun – there were lots of very friendly people and what a gorgeous day! Great judging. We had a nice time in our newly decorated salon-style booth with all the bright colors. Anja was drop-dead stunning and performed well for me. We’re looking forward to the next show.”

Jacki has been making her mark in the Southern California and national Poodle show circuit.

The Daily Breeze picked up the story which you can see here. Their photographer captured them in this exhilirating moment while Jacki did scissoring and later brushed Anja’s top-knot into a puff of cotton candy.

With a beautiful poodle such as Anja, its no wonder she’s making headlines in the area.

Admiration Wins Again

Admiration wins again at the “Desert to the Sea Dog Fanciers’” ALL BREED FUN MATCH this past weekend at the Hotel Claremont! What a fun day playing with our Poodle puppies. Elizabeth Conway, new owner to “Admiration Dallas at Falcon Crest” aka “Dallas” and I had so much fun watching Dallas get so excited and happy about being out, strutting his stuff. Dallas gave a big “Hello” to everyone he encountered. What a show puppy! Chelsey was a little star in the ring, loving every minute.

We had many laughs watching little Chinese Shar Pei puppies and French Bulldog puppies, HOW CUTE!

Stephanie, Admiration’s grooming assistant, was the photographer that day. What a good job she did! We are looking forward to our next Dog Show day out with the gang. Hope you enjoy this little Slide Show.

Well all that grooming and primping at Admiration Ranch is paying off! Fletcher got a Major at the Sand to Sea Non-Sporting Association Show in Indio yesterday. Fletcher showed like a rock star! He’s such a calm cool kid but when he gets in that ring STAND BACK AND WATCH! We are so proud of him! The day was so gorgeous and skies were so clear at the beautiful Polo Club where the show is held. Both Fletch and I had fun. We look forward to doing it again tomorrow!

Valri’ and Mimi are Top at UKC

Admiration Charmed I’m Sure (Valri’) obtained her UKC Grand Championship status and is now holding steady at #2 UKC Standard Poodle in the world. Her sister, Admiration Come Fly with Me (Mimi) just took Breed (Best Standard Poodle) in a recent UKC dog show over 11 other females.

The United Kennel Club (UKC) classifies the Standard Poodle in their Gun Dog group. Showing a Poodle at UKC shows differs from showing a Poodle in AKC shows in that Poodles don’t have to have the “fancy hair cut”, known as a Continental, and one cannot be a professional Handler. UKC recognizes many unusual breeds that are not recognized by the AKC. Shows are lots of fun and is a good family activity to get involved in.

Admiration Takes Best Brace in Show at PCA National ‘09

Jacki, Mimi and Valri accepting awards

As many of you know by now, Jacki Panzik took Best Brace in Show at the PCA National Show in Maryland last week. (PCA = Poodle Club of America). That means she and our girls, Admiration Charmed I’m Sure, “Valri” and Admiration Come Fly With Me, “Mimi” – standing next to Jacki are considered the Best Poodle Brace Team in the country and they’ll go down in history.

This win makes us very proud, indeed.

A Brace (def: 2 of a kind) is where a Handler takes 2 dogs into the show ring and the judging is based on the synchronization of the 2 dogs and the Handler. Both of the beautiful white Poodles are sisters and are our own breeding from our beloved Ch Admiration Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, “Trinity”. Mimi and Valri reside in Allentown, New Jersey with their mommy, Lucy Tyler an Olympic Medalist (cycling 1996) and daddy, Frank Geck.

Valri’s First Championship

We’re so thrilled! Lovely Valri got her first title as Show Champion with the United Kennel Club. Here’s the wonderful email her mommy had sent to us along with her certificate. Mimi’s next…

“Hi. The first of the girls’ official UKC Championship certificates arrived
in the mail today. It is attached. Mimi’s won’t be far behind. She
finished her Championship with 300 points (!) at the shows in Manassas, VA.
As I think I told you, Valri’ already has 4 of the 5 requisite Champion wins
towards her Grand Championship. She’s actually won Champion of Champions 6 shows in a row, but 2 of them were 1 Champion short for points. We’re doing a cluster of UKC shows in April and/or May. That should seal the deal for Valri’s Grand C’ship and Mimi is bound to leap forward as a Champion, too.

“We have 2 AKC shows this week-Thursday 3/19 and Friday 3/20 in Edison, NJ at the Raritan Center. Historically, the entries haven’t been very high at
these shows but this year they are both majors. There are 15 open bitches
and 2 Special bitches entered each day. In NJ, it only takes 11 bitches for
a 3 point major. Both of these girls are in heat. It is the 3rd time for
each of them-they are overachievers. At least it will be out of the way in
time for PCA.
