I have read your advice on grooming and learned so much. Your experience and guidance is always clear and professionally presented.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.
I love your website. I began looking at your site while I was waiting for my girl to be born, and I have found it extremely informative. Poodles, standards in particular, are such a great and versatile breed but good mentoring is a definite requirement for the neophyte. Which I am.
One of the first things I learned and implemented was – and I can’t remember what you all it – laying her down on her back between my legs and getting her accustomed to being handled. What a valuable lesson. Not only is she agreeable to the grooming process, she earned her Canine Good Citizen title at 9 months old. Being handled is the hardest thing for puppies to calmly accept.

According to the AKC registration application the variety of Poodle colors vary:

Apricot
Black
Blue
Brown
Cafe Au Lait
Cream
Gray
Red
Silver
Silver Beige
White

Many opinions surround similar colors and are debated among breeders, owners and Poodle fans when it comes to a particular Poodle color.

To truly discuss color let’s first talk about “clearing” of coat color. This is a process by which a Poodle’s coat color changes through his/her life until it stabilizes in color at about 3 years of age. In some cases even after age 3 the coat color can continue to “clear”. For example Poodles that start off with what is thought to be a black coat can fade to blue or gray and even a platinum Silver when they are finished with coat clearing.

A true Apricot starts off literally the color of an orange then clears in hue to, in some cases, a very light peach almost unrecognizable as the same color as the once brilliant orange of the puppy one brought home from the breeder at a young age. Puppies that start off dark brown can clear to what some would call a Cafe Au Lait (coffee with cream) or even a Silver Beige as they mature. Where as Red puppies can clear to what one would be inclined to perceive the coat as an apricot. A true cream starts off with a solid coat of dark peach, not peach tipped ears or splotches of peach on the coat but a dark buttery color. Creams clear to a buttery color that is consistent throughout the coat. Where as whites start with ear tips and perhaps a patch down the center of the back that has a peachy looking color. Then there is the “Ice white” puppy that is snow white from birth. White to white breedings that produce these ultra white Poodles can be risky as a pure white genetic line can be prone to health issues that are not worth the risk to get that ice white coat from birth. Especially when the puppies that are bred more diversely with a black Poodle here and there on the pedigree will have a better chance of having the gorgeous black skin pigment around the lips, nose and eyes we like to see and will eventually clear to white.

It must be mentioned that coat care has a lot to do with the color a Poodle may clear to and how fast. Take for example the Silver, Grey or Blue coats which go through sort of a brown stage as they clear. I have seen young blue Poodles that I would swear were brown throughout during their adolescent and young adult stages of life. Then I see later on and they have cleared to a gorgeous dark pewter coat as a 3 year old adult knowing that they started off black makes the transformation even more interesting. An adroit groomer will use specific products to bring out the best in a Poodle coat at the different stages of development and change.

To get the most out of coat color one must keep the Poodle out of the sun. In the case of white coat clearing from a creamy puppy coat, they must be out of the sun and water. Proper shampoos and conditioners must be applied. White, blue and silver coats need a good bluing products in order to bring out the white in the coat like many whitening shampoos, conditioners and coat dressings found at www.Poodlesupply.com. Coats of every color should be bathed a minimum of once a week to really bring out the preferred coat color.

A breeder will register a Poodle marking the color he/she anticipates the coat will clear to. so if a puppy looks to be prone to being a blue when older the breeder will mark that the puppy is blue on the registration papers even though the puppy appears to be black at the time of filling out the papers. Very seldom does a coat of a 5, 10 or 15 year old remain the same as when the dog was 2 months or even 2 years old. Again one must take into consideration the coat care the dog receives as mentioned above.

Jett Doing Well

Hi Jacki,
I am the owner of one of your puppies from the litter Natalie had in the summer of 2001. I do not know if your recall the black puppy we named Jett. He is now nine years old and doing very well. People can't believe he is nine years old. He is still a happy playful poodle. He is such a great dog, and we love him very much. I was wondering if Natalie is still with you. I remember her being such a good mother to her puppies.

Little Ella Goes to NASA

A note from Kathy, Little Ella the Standard Poodle Puppy in training at NASA :

Just wanted to let you know that tomorrow is Ella's first day at
"work". I want to do this "just right", so I have been giving it a lot of
thought. Wish us luck!!

NASA (where I work) is on Edwards Air Force Base, and I was aware that they
have a therapy dog there. I called the guy who owns him and he brought the
dog over for me to meet on Friday. We talked a long time and he said I can
bring Ella over any time to go around and get "socialized". At least the
people over there that he knows are accustomed to the energy needed to be
around these dogs. I will probably have to train the people at NASA more
than I will have to train Ella!!

Colors in Standard Poodles

I do not recommend purchasing a Standard Poodle based on color.

Here's the run down on color associated characteristics:

Black or white are the most stable and outgoing in the breed.

Blue and silvers are a bit reserved although sweet

Browns are know as the "clowns in the breed" as they tend to be more active

Reds and apricots are sweet but can be harder to train, a bit goofy, very loving though

Party Poodles are not as developed as they have been ignored by the educated breeders due to the fact they are not recognize on the AKC Show Ring. However in recent years some of the good breeders have taken an interest and are trying to bring them into being the elegant dogs we see in the other colors.

The blacks and whites have had most of the attention by knowledgeable breeders so they tend to be more sophisticated in temperament and refined in appearance.

The Standard Poodle is the best breed for many reasons. The first that most people think of is their intelligence. This breed is one of (if not the) most intelligent dogs in existence. Many people think of them as being human-like.

Another reason for the popularity of the Standard Poodle is their beauty. No one can deny that the Poodle is the most elegant of all dog breeds. One quick glimpse at an AKC breeds poster or a stroll through any dog show is proof enough that they are magnificent to look at. Having a Standard Poodle walking by your side down the street or in a crowd is something to be proud of… not to mention the amount of Admiration that you get.

Brushing Your Poodle

Brushing a Poodle, whether it be for show or looking glamorous at home, is a developed skill. Correct equipment is a must to get good results. A proper Grooming Table, Pin Brushes, Metal Comb, Coat Conditioning Sprays, a High Speed Blow Dryer, a good Finishing Dryer and proper Slicker Brushes are key to getting the job done. This equipment must be of superior quality and cannot be purchased at the local pet supply. Investment in professional grade equipment is well worth it, as lower-quality equipment will not get the same results, nor will they last. Chances are you’ll end up frustrated and weary.

Bathing your Poodle once every 7 to 10 days is a must. Brushing should be performed every other day in between baths. This is a time-saving maintenance schedule that will save tons of dematting time and keep your Poodle in fantastic condition. Of course coat management is also effected by using a good shampoo and conditioner combination.

Banding the top knots and mane area is also required for keeping coat tangle-free and not suffering damage from breakage.

Growing coat on a Poodle also requires good nutrition with supplementation and a life style that is fun while keeping coat care in mind. Lots of tugging and pulling by other pets is a hindrance and will result in non-optimum coat condition. Show Poodles need to play with human friends or pet friends that are not inclined to grab and pull those valuable locks on the head, ears and back of neck.

Poodles must be trained to lay on the grooming tables both in a Sphinx-like position and on their sides in a relaxed laying position. Start this early when they are puppies and you’ll be have a much easier time.

When brushing a Poodle’s top knot and mane have the poodle on the grooming table in a Sphinx-like position. I start near the tail end and work my way up to the top knot when brushing. I use a good conditioning spray or if the poodle has some matting I use some even more concentrated conditioning spray. The golden rule here is NEVER BRUSH A DRY COAT! I use my long pinned Pin Brush when brushing coat that is not clean or could have some tangles.

Using the Finishing Dryer on a cool, not-too-high air flow setting, I start brushing at the edge of the long coat along the back. It’s a very light touch with a slowed flick of the wrist upward motion as if to sort of gently “pluck” the matts out of the coat. Remember any coat that comes out on the brush means that you are brushing too hard and trying to get through the process too fast. When grooming a Poodle, time is not an issue. You must relax and enjoy the time you are spending with your poodle. The poodles like being groomed if they know you are not stressed and just trying to “get-er-done”.

DE-MATTING

If you run into heavy tangles, take your metal comb and work through the mat starting at the edge using only the end tooth of your comb a tiny bit at a time. Be sure to keep the dryer air flow pointed directly on the area you are working on – the air flow helps to separate the tangles and lets you see that you are making progress. You can also gently separate the big clumps of coat by pulling them apart with your fingers, then continue with your comb and then your Pin Brush. Be sure you have plenty of conditioner on the mat when using this method so you don’t break coat. Brush at the mat, working from the sides of the mat first. You can hold the mat with your other hand so that you get into it with your brush. Brushing in every direction breaks the mat up more efficiently. I never cut mats with my scissors or any other instruments to get through them. If matting is particularly heavy I use a Dematting Comb to break them up further after brushing. When brushing or combing always start with the comb or brush that has the widest space between the teeth then go to a comb or brush that has teeth closer together and so on.

A NOTE ON BRUSHING OUT TANGLES

If the proper technique is used most tangles will just melt away. One thing one must have is faith that the technique works and not get into too much hurry. If your poodle is very tangled then try many short sessions to get the brushing done.

Brushing the sides of your poodle is done basically the same as the instructions above. However the poodle is laying flat on it’s side. This takes training to get a poodle comfortable in this position. Once a poodle learns that they have nothing to fear from being in this oh-so-vulnerable position, they learn to relax and enjoy the attention. My rule is that if I clip or scissor the coat in an area, then it’s ok to use a Slicker Brush to brush through the coat, providing the brushing is done in a gentle manner, not scraping skin or causing skinned areas in the coat from brushing too hard.

Always follow up with your Metal Comb after you have brushed the coat to make sure all tangles are found and handled. Never bathe a matted coat. This will only set the mats and make them much more difficult to brush out.

Okay, so you’re now ready to bathe your Poodle! Well Done!

Picking your Standard Poodle Puppy Out

When picking a Poodle Puppy remember that the puppy who hangs in the back of the pack or seems timid when approached will be the puppy that grows to be a very sweet, mild and loving adult. These puppies will be easier puppies to get through the 6 month to 1 1/2 year stage of life as they will not be as rambunctious and as full of mischief as their more outgoing, at a young age, litter mates.

Often times people mistake these puppies as being "shy" but with the right guidance these are the puppies that make the best companions for those who are not inclined to many rigorous outdoor activities. Which is not to say that puppies with this sweet nature should not be taken out to socialize.

These are the "let's go to the Mall" puppies where as the more inquisitive puppies are more likely to say, "let's go to the river, jump in the water, run up the hill, then counter surf with muddy paws"!

Poodle Tails

Some lines produce what is called a "Gay" or "Rune" Tail, meaning they lay over the back of the Poodle. As the Poodle gets older some will relax and be somewhat straighter, it depends on how "Gay" the tail is to begin with.

My own viewpoint is that when we started docking the tails longer we started seeing more of this phenomenon.

The show ring hated the Gay Tail at first but now is being more forgiving, depending on the judge Both Stanzi and Touche' are donning Gay Tails. We think they are very cute and Poodley.

Cherri’s turn to get a bath today. Stanzi too will be bathed and rebanded (top knot and mane protection). Our show Poodles have to be banded every other day and bathed at least once a week. The Poodles love to come to the PoodleTown Tavern to have their hair done. They get to stay in the office until it’s time for them to be groomed. Cherri’s show relaunch is scheduled for January 2010. She’s matured and is more beautiful than ever.

Ella and Her Poodle Pups

My husband Don loves to sing to our Standard Poodles. Ella and her puppies really enjoy his soothing serenade while spending time in their playpen in the middle of our living room. We know having a bunch of puppies in the living room isn't a lifestyle that everyone could enjoy but it really works for us. Ella is so precious with her pack of gorgeous pups. She teaches them their first lessons in manners. Not all Poodle Moms do this with their puppies. Ella is special and so are her puppies because of her influence on them.

Landscaping for Your Poodles

When we first purchased Admiration Ranch back in 2006, we knew we would needed to do some fixing up to make it Poodle-friendly. It just comes with the territory of Poodle Ownership.

We laid 3/4″ pea gravel on our 2,000 foot driveway that was perfect for then to romp on and do their business.

We had to remove some pampas grass patches that they liked to rub against, which cut their hair in the process.

Back in the early 00’s we had to do quite a few modifications in our Anaheim home, particularly in the back yard. We laid concrete and molded the property to conform to our Poodles’ lifestyle and habits.

Dogs will dig and they will get into all kinds of situations.

National Dog Day – August 26

Okay, for those of you who don’t know it, today is National Dog Day. This is the one day out of the 365 that we honor our best buddies.

Think of it… 365 days out of the year they are honoring you. They are there offering you their most adoration, companionship, fun and joy.

They can’t help it. It’s in their makeup.

Well, while we should automatically return the favor every day as well, on National Dog Day it’s time to give them that extra love and attention that they already give you all year long.

Here are some ideas:

Take your dog for a walk
Take him to your local pet store
Get him the treat he always wanted
Buy him a new toy

Jacki and Anja Win Again

Jacki and Anja Win Again and this time its in the news. Yesterday, Jacki and Anja were in Torrance at the South Bay Kennel Club’s AKC All-Breed Dog Show. There were lots of Standard Poodles among the other breeds competing. Anja walked out of the ring with another point for her career, escalating Admiration higher in the rankings of show Poodles.

Jacki remarked, “It was loads of fun – there were lots of very friendly people and what a gorgeous day! Great judging. We had a nice time in our newly decorated salon-style booth with all the bright colors. Anja was drop-dead stunning and performed well for me. We’re looking forward to the next show.”

Jacki has been making her mark in the Southern California and national Poodle show circuit.

The Daily Breeze picked up the story which you can see here. Their photographer captured them in this exhilirating moment while Jacki did scissoring and later brushed Anja’s top-knot into a puff of cotton candy.

With a beautiful poodle such as Anja, its no wonder she’s making headlines in the area.

Poodle – the most remarkable of the European breeds. Originally from Germany, though thought to be from France, the Poodle comes from the Water Dog. The term Pudel was used which means “puddle”. If you want to see a happy Poodle, take him to the beach or a lake. They are notorious as duck retrievers and they’re great swimmers.

Owning a Poodle is a big responsibility and should not be considered halfheartedly. There is much grooming that needs to be done in most cases, unless you just want to keep you furry friend clipped down.

We’ve enjoyed our Poodles for many years and have placed our pups in homes all around the United States. We hope you enjoy your Poodle as much as we do!

French Poodle Photos

If you’re looking for french poodle photos, you might as well just simplify you search and look for poodle pics. While many people thing the Poodle originated in France, the fact of the matter is that this lovely breed has its true origins in Germany.

The poodle comes in 3 sizes: Standard (original), Miniature and Toy.

There aren’t French Minis and there aren’t “teacups” according to the American Kennel Club. A “teacup” is simply a small toy poodle. But then again, if enough people consider that there is such a thing as a “teacup poodle”, the AKC may change the rules… who knows?

A Note From Maksim

Hello Jacki,

Just wanted to let you know Maks is doing great! We absolutely love him, he is all you said he was going to be and more. Sunday we took him with us to Gene’s sisters house to play in the yard with their dog Sadie, he had so much fun, I took pictures and will send some your way. I think I told you he rings the little bell on the door knob to let me know he has to go outside to go potty, he learned this with me only having to teach him one time, he is extremely intelligent. No accidents in the house. I brush him every day, he loves it and I love it too, he looks so gorgeous. We go on walks around the streets here, we are in a gated community with slightly sloping streets so it is good exercise for him and me too. It has been pretty cold up here so I have not gotten him clipped yet, he gets brushed daily so his coat is always soft and gorgeous but I am scheduling an appt either end of this week or next, since it will start warming up here. It is a beautiful sunny day and was this weekend too, but is supposed to rain through the week, so since we are at an altitude of 3000 feet it can get pretty cold. He is getting long, but it is all soft and not one mat, although I just love his long soft coat and love to brush him, he is about due to get groomed. We have bathed him and he is great about it, he loves when I blow dry him and runs into the bathroom when I blow dry my own hair and wants me to blow dry him, so I do for a few minutes and he stands there acting beautiful, it’s so funny.

We found another pet store that is great, it has the same dog food we have kept him on that you recommended. We took him and got him a new collar since he has already grown out of the one we first bought him and he got another toy, he loves to go with me in the car, he pretty much goes everywhere with us. I really should have a bumper sticker that says “Maksim’s car” He is a happy camper, has a wonderful and fun personality. He had a busy day today going around with me, we came home and ran around in the backyard he wags his tail so fast and now he is plopped on the floor taking a nap.

I will also let you know what he weighs as soon as I know. He is growing and is just the right weight for his height. When we first brought him home he chowed down his food, our other dog did that too for the first two days, I think it was because other dogs were around before. But after the first two days he eats slowly and casually, I am glad since I think it will help his digestive system. We also play with him before he eats and not so much right after he eats.

Gene and I both feel that this is the best breed and best dog we have ever had and he is absolutely suited to our lifestyle. Such a wonderful loving companion. Oh and I have to let you know what a good watch dog he is becoming. Gene’s sister barged in the back door unannounced and Mak’s jumped up growling and ran towards her barking, (he has a tough sounding intimidating bark now, not a froo froo poodle) we said it’s ok and he settled down right away. We will tell his sister, that in the future it won’t be a good idea to just barge in the door, he is just a puppy now, but as he gets older and more protective, it probably won’t be a good idea. Hah

He is perfect, he is a watch dog that barks and growls and means it, but if you say it’s ok he listens. Not like our doberman who really wanted to do damage, much too difficult to control, he is now doing Schutzhund, since his bite and attack drive were so strong. Maksim is perfect, a watch dog who is intelligent and understands the job of protection and is very loving and a lot of fun too.

As you can see I can’t say enough about him.

Crate Training for Fiona

Fiona is getting reluctant to go into her crate and while I am not opposed to giving treats I am concerned that if she gets one every time then it will take one every time.

Using treats at Fiona’s current age (4 months) is a good thing. Always say “crate” as she enters. This command will imprint on her and when you start your formal obedience with her she will learn the concept of doing as you tell her to do simply because you tell her to do it. Treat training is a gentle and positive way to get a puppy started on a good behavior.

Admiration wins again at the “Desert to the Sea Dog Fanciers’” ALL BREED FUN MATCH this past weekend at the Hotel Claremont! What a fun day playing with our Poodle puppies. Elizabeth Conway, new owner to “Admiration Dallas at Falcon Crest” aka “Dallas” and I had so much fun watching Dallas get so excited and happy about being out, strutting his stuff. Dallas gave a big “Hello” to everyone he encountered. What a show puppy! Chelsey was a little star in the ring, loving every minute.

We had many laughs watching little Chinese Shar Pei puppies and French Bulldog puppies, HOW CUTE!

Just wanted you to know that Cindy Lou is absolutely wonderful. I love her soooo much. She is a very very special girl. She’s doing well with *everything*! I’ve had her on the grooming table for some clipping 2xs plus a couple of more times just for brushing and she is doing well. She’s had a couple of baths too – I have a nice stainless steel bath in the grooming room that Tim got for me a year ago.

We’ve been getting her out several times a week for socialization and she is amazing.

And, Zorro is so good with her. He plays very gently with her and they adore each other.

Bloating | Bloat: Do Poodles Burp?

Thank you for your email. Burping means gas build up. Not good because it can lead to Bloat which can be fatal.

Things that help to prevent Bloating are:

No Exercise 1 hour before or after meals
NO feeding or watering out of elevated bowls
Feeding only highly digestible foods that your dog is not allergic to like Raw Green Tripe
No grains in food
Feeding a number of small meals instead of one big meal
No “Free Feeding’ – (having food available at any given time)
Chiropractic adjustments
Prairie Paste – 3 tubes, double dose 4 times per day until gone.
After Prairie Paste treatment is completed add double dose of Critter Corral to food with each meal.
Do not let your dog bark for long durations of time. They swallow air and this can blow up the belly and cause bloat.
If dog is very thirsty only allow small amounts of water at 10 minute intervals. Never allow them to drink in excess, particularly if feeding kibble which can bulk up and cause bloat and torsion (can lead to a quick death).
Purchase a Bloat Kit to fend off torsion on the way to your emergency treatment facility. We can provide this to you on special order.

Best Dog in the World

One’s first love is always perfect until one meets one’s second love.

Years ago, I owned the very best dog in the world.

I was a child when we got her. She was a graceful brown hound, a
foundling who taught me that our pets are not purchased, but ordained.

She romped when I did and knew how to smile in that funny way that
only some dogs have. She grew up with me, always there when I needed her. My grown hand still remembers the sleek bump on the top of her head and that gentle divot just past her nose that fit my index finger just perfectly.

She passed away during one of my college vacations. My heart broke
then, and I knew that there would never be another dog like her, and there
hasn’t been. I was sure that I could never love another dog as much as
I’d loved her.

Fortunately, I was wrong about that part.

My next dog came into my life when I was married. My husband
traveled for a living, and I was often lonely. This dog grew into a lumbering Wolfhound and Sheepdog mix who taught me patience. He was a large, grizzled sentry, that dog. He rarely left my side until the children were born, and then he became their guardian, too. I can still feel that swirl of fur along his back and the weight of his chin when it rested in my lap.

When he passed away, my heart broke. As much as I had loved that
childhood dog, I had been wrong. This was the very best dog in the world.
There would never be another dog like him, and there hasn’ t been. I was sure I would never love another dog as much as I’d loved him.

I was wrong again.

We got the next one, a loping black Lab-and-Terrier mix, when the
children were little. He taught me the importance of adapting. He was
everyone’s dog from the beginning, and that was just as it should be. When he played tug of war with the children, he dragged them across the kitchen floor as they shrieked with laughter. He always seemed to sleep in the room of the child who needed his company the most.

These days his face is expressively gray, and he spends more time
with me since the almost-grown children aren’t around so much.

The other day my oldest, home from college, played tug of war. We all laughed–just a little–as the dog was gently pulled across the kitchen floor.

He is, of course, the very best dog in the world. I will never
forget that exquisitely soft tuft of fur behind his ears or the tickly feel
when he nuzzles. There won’t be another dog like him.

And that’s okay, because we will never be at this point in our
lives again.

Sometimes I’ve wondered why two species that get along so well should have such different life spans. It just doesn’t seem right. And then I wonder if that’s part of the lesson: To teach us that love itself has a spirit that returns again and again and never really dies.

It’s amazing, in a way, how they bring to our ever-changing lives
exactly what it is that we need at the moment. They make room for one
another, this family of dogs who has never even met. And they fit–into our
families, into our lives, into our memories, and into our hearts–because they always have been and always will be the best dogs in the world.

The kids, myself and my husband all thank you for picking the perfect dog for our family. Bella fits right in here. She loves to play in the yard and at night when the kids are asleep she is so quiet and rested on her cushion in our family room. My husband and I walk her every night. She is so smart that she knows when it is time for her walk even before we do. The same time every night she waits so patiently by the door for us to get ready. This just in from Ringo’s family in the Frisco area. We love Ringo and are so happy that he has such a wonderful home!

“Hey Jacki -

“I needed to get a quick email out to you to tell you that Ringo is doing wonderfully! I feel like he loved us so much and we loved him so much right from the moment we met him. He’s done so well sleeping all night in his crate in Phoebe’s room (she gets up and takes him out at 6:30-7:00 when they both get up). Outside of a couple little whines the second night (for 30 seconds), he’s never made a peep at night. With some trainer help, he adjusted to all the crazy sounds of daytime walking in the city within a couple days. He is a joy out on 24th Street (cute shopping street by us) and loves all dogs and people. He sits at every corner before we cross streets. He’s getting used to all the people who come and go from our home and the electricians and handyman and gardeners all give him treats and sweet talk. He’s learned where to go potty and heals when I walk him around the yard — and we play after he goes potty in the designated are. He DOES know how to fetch — and drop the ball and then sit. Of course, he gets excited some times and we are teaching “settle.” We know not to play fetch very hard and only for 5 minutes or so (the vet reminded us of this), so that he does not over-do his bones. But he’s a genius! He is amazing with all dogs and all children. And he’s getting over some caution about who’s coming thru the front door and starting to get the stairs of a Victorian home (but we’re going slowly as I’m very caution of stairs).

“PS – he loves loves getting brushed and snuggling and enjoys going daily to a play/training group. The kids and Andy are equally in love!

Standard Poodle Puppy Testimonial: Yzzie

Hi Jacki ..

Just thought I’d send a note and tell you how wonderful my little fairy princess is .. she’s just a tad over 19″ at the shoulder and 33 pounds at almost 11 months. Her vet called her perfect and she is.

She’s just graduating her first obedience class – at the top – and is heading into agility classes next. She’s smart and wants to please. Most importantly, though, she is the sweetest little girl you would ever hope to meet. She loves to sit with you, whether at home, at work or at Starbucks (one of her favorite places!). She cuddles with you on the couch, sits in your lap and loves to be held. She’s quite the little charmer and has family and friends eating out of her paws. And she loves dogs as much as she loves people.

She’s quite the little athlete, too. I see her competing in agility and especially in jumpers.

She still puppy-silly, and has the hairdo to go with it. She’ll get her first “adult” look in a few months, but for now she’s floppy and funny and my only worry with her is that someone will steal her. I’ve had a number of people as for her breeder and lots more just ask if I want to sell her.

Admiration Charmed I’m Sure (Valri’) obtained her UKC Grand Championship status and is now holding steady at #2 UKC Standard Poodle in the world. Her sister, Admiration Come Fly with Me (Mimi) just took Breed (Best Standard Poodle) in a recent UKC dog show over 11 other females.

The United Kennel Club (UKC) classifies the Standard Poodle in their Gun Dog group. Showing a Poodle at UKC shows differs from showing a Poodle in AKC shows in that Poodles don’t have to have the “fancy hair cut”, known as a Continental, and one cannot be a professional Handler. UKC recognizes many unusual breeds that are not recognized by the AKC. Shows are lots of fun and is a good family activity to get involved in.

The puppies are more wonderful than we had even imagined, and they fit into life here so easily! We can’t even begin to thank you enough for the beauty, attitudes and behavior of these two dogs!!!

Admiration Takes Best Brace in Show at PCA National ‘09

Jacki, Mimi and Valri accepting awards

As many of you know by now, Jacki Panzik took Best Brace in Show at the PCA National Show in Maryland last week. (PCA = Poodle Club of America). That means she and our girls, Admiration Charmed I’m Sure, “Valri” and Admiration Come Fly With Me, “Mimi” – standing next to Jacki are considered the Best Poodle Brace Team in the country and they’ll go down in history.

This win makes us very proud, indeed.

A Brace (def: 2 of a kind) is where a Handler takes 2 dogs into the show ring and the judging is based on the synchronization of the 2 dogs and the Handler. Both of the beautiful white Poodles are sisters and are our own breeding from our beloved Ch Admiration Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, “Trinity”. Mimi and Valri reside in Allentown, New Jersey with their mommy, Lucy Tyler an Olympic Medalist (cycling 1996) and daddy, Frank Geck.

"This is just a note to include with the picture of Remy, the puppy we purchaed on Nov 11 2007. He is well, happy and a joy to have in our home. My husband died in June and I don't think I could have done as well without my companion. He weighs 65 lbs., has a trainer that takes him for long walks twice a week, although he has a third of an acre, fenced, to run and play in. He's had swimming lessons but does not like the water. He's extremely bright (the trainer says), loving, becoming a good watch dog, and has yet to growl. Thank you for giving me a joy. Sincerely, B.R."

Really Cleaning a Dog’s Teeth

Hi Jacki

I just had my 1st successful brushing of Midnight’s teeth. Before we were using the regular dog poultry flavored toothbrush kit, and getting nowhere. He always squirmed, bit me, and ran away. My 29 years of Dental Hygiene experience just kicked in. When it comes to toothbrushes, smaller is always better, especially with a dog. I had ordered a double ended scaler. Remember, I have years of experience scaling teeth, above and below the gumline. When Ben said “It’s too dark, you can’t see”, I reminded him that I could do it blindfolded while standing on my head. I noticed Midnight was laying still and it was easy. A metal scaler is thin and sleek, not like a huge brush. I then borrowed polishing paste from the Dentist. I finally remembered tonight what I had been telling patients for years “SMALLER is better”. Midnight actually laid down and relaxed. The brush was a baby brush so it wasn’t overwhelming and he liked the mint taste of the prophy paste. He let me use the whole round packet up. Don’t use actual prophy paste more than 4 or 5 times a year [too abrasive].

Please spread the word to people to get the smallest toothbrush possible. The dog will be much more comfortable and grateful.

I hope all my years in dental practice will help dog owners. The people who invent these kits have no experience with actually cleaning teeth and comfort.

I can’t believe it took me so long to put on my other hat. Hope this helps others.

Valri’s First Championship

We’re so thrilled! Lovely Valri got her first title as Show Champion with the United Kennel Club. Here’s the wonderful email her mommy had sent to us along with her certificate. Mimi’s next…

“Hi. The first of the girls’ official UKC Championship certificates arrived
in the mail today. It is attached. Mimi’s won’t be far behind. She
finished her Championship with 300 points (!) at the shows in Manassas, VA.
As I think I told you, Valri’ already has 4 of the 5 requisite Champion wins
towards her Grand Championship. She’s actually won Champion of Champions 6 shows in a row, but 2 of them were 1 Champion short for points. We’re doing a cluster of UKC shows in April and/or May. That should seal the deal for Valri’s Grand C’ship and Mimi is bound to leap forward as a Champion, too.

“We have 2 AKC shows this week-Thursday 3/19 and Friday 3/20 in Edison, NJ at the Raritan Center. Historically, the entries haven’t been very high at
these shows but this year they are both majors. There are 15 open bitches
and 2 Special bitches entered each day. In NJ, it only takes 11 bitches for
a 3 point major. Both of these girls are in heat. It is the 3rd time for
each of them-they are overachievers. At least it will be out of the way in
time for PCA.

Getting the Right Blow Dryer

Hello,

I wanted to thank you for the article on blow drying your poodle.

I recently got a 13 pound poodle mix from the shelter. He definitely has a poodle coat. When I got him he was extremely matted and I carefully shaved him down. This took a couple of days so that we wouldn’t wear each other out. I’ve bathed him and taken him to a local groomer to have his hair evened out.

Now I’d like to take on the grooming. Otis is my first poodle. I’ve had cockers and newfies in the past, so this is very unfamiliar territory. I’d like to keep him in a serviceable puppy clip.

I’m getting ready to purchase a dryer, and am becoming a bit confused. After researching dryers I think I’ve settled on a Metro Air Force dryer. The big question is which model. A review of the hand held model indicated that it might be too powerful for a small dog. Would purchasing a two speed dryer address this problem?

If you have any words of wisdom on this topic, I’d be very grateful.

A Puppy’s Homecoming

How old should a puppy be when he/she comes home?

If you purchase a puppy between the ages of 8 weeks and 12 weeks there are some of things that you should be aware of.

1. A very young puppy, 8 to 12 weeks of age, is high maintenance. They do not have bladder and bowel control yet. To expect for a puppy this age to hold his/her bladder and bowel overnight is expecting too much. Be prepared to be picking up and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning up after your new puppy. My best advice for taking care of a puppy of this age is to get an “exercise” pen from your local pet supply and keep the puppy in that with newspaper down in an area of the pen. The puppy should know to go on the paper.
Buy some latex gloves at the drug store, you’re going to need them. Oh and maybe a new mop too.

2. Be prepared to get up in the night to let your puppy out should he/she be in a crate and start to cry. You must get up to let the puppy out as you do not want them to get the idea it’s all right to soil his/her crate. So plan on some interrupted sleep for a while. Puppy should be put to bed around 10:30pm and will need to get up around 6:30am, with a couple of trips out in between.

3. The very young puppy should not be left alone for any duration of time. Puppies this age generally have no common sense. They can find all kinds of things to get into mischief with. They are also very sensitive and if anything upsets them they can easily become ill due to stress. It’s important that your puppy be with someone at all times during this time of his/her life.

4. Your puppy is too young to go anywhere with you. He/she must be kept in your immediate surroundings. Never take a puppy this age on walks around the neighborhood. Their immune systems are not yet strong and if they catch something it can be a very heartbreaking and expensive experience. Stay home.

5. Do not have visitors coming and going. This can stress a young puppy out and cause illness.

6. If you have visitors make sure they step on a towel that has been soaked in bleach before entering your house or they remove their shoes. Germs and viruses can be carried in on shoes. You should also disinfect shoes before entering if you’ve been out and about. Always ask if your friends have been to area of heavy pet traffic before coming over. If they say “yes” then have them come back at another time when they have not been to a heavily trafficked area.

7. Stay away from your veterinarian’s office! Lot’s of bad stuff to pick up there. Give last vaccinations at home yourself!

8. Start teaching your new puppy to walk on a leash right away if he/she was not old enough to be taught by the breeder before going home. You’ll have to do this on your own because your puppy is still too young for obedience school and shouldn’t be around other dogs yet.

9. Do not let your puppy run around your house. This is truly asking for trouble. Your puppy is an infant. Make sure you understand this and treat him/her as that.

10. You will need to get your puppy used to being on the grooming table at this time. This will set the puppy up for a no stress experience when going to the groomer throughout the puppy’s life. Set the puppy on a non slip table once every 4 or 5 days. Make sure to never walk away or let go of the puppy for even a moment while on the table. They roll off easily and can be hurt badly if they fall. Brush your puppy, get the puppy used to having his/her toenails worked on, you can use a file for this. Make sure to keep the puppies ears free of hair. This means plucking out the hair in the ear canal. Make sure that the ear does not get irritated because of the tender skin of such a young puppy. If so then you will have to medicate ears accordingly so as to not have the puppy develop a painful problem. Do not take your puppy to a groomer at this age, the puppy’s too young to be around that many other dogs.

If this doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs to you then we would suggest you wait until the puppy is over 12 weeks of age before taking him/her home. That way a good Breeder will have gone through all this for you and the breeder, being more experienced, will have spared the puppy the stress and strain you may have felt because breeders do this kind of thing all the time and are used to not getting any sleep, constantly being interrupted, being home bound and on…… Your puppy will be grooved in on the basics and life together, for you and your puppy will start off a with a much simpler routine.
