I have had two standards, my first was with us for 14 years. Cried like a baby when I lost him.
Now I have my new buddy while he is a little different although just as much fun and loving. Love this breed!

Just wanted to follow up on Cindy Lou's crate training! She now runs into her crate on her cue to "crate" . . . and she gets her reward once she "downs." This morning she went into her crate and was waiting for Tim to bring her breakfast. Good girl!

We've also worked on crate manners for when she comes out. She sits, waits, and looks while I open the crate door and waits for me to release her. Then, she comes out and sits. It's good to have a calm routine for the puppy when they come out of the crate.

She's a very fast learner!

Cindy Lou started becoming reluctant to crate as well. She's about the same age and perhaps a sibling? But, I played some crate games with her and also started feeding her in her crate. The goal is to make the crate a happy place to be. I always toss a treat in the crate and at the same time, say "crate" as Jackie suggested. But, I also will toss a handful of kibble or other treats in there for her to hunt for. We practiced going in the crate as a "boot-camp session" - in and out about 10 times - by tossing the treats in, and then releasing to come out right away and no treats when she comes out. Then immediately toss treats back in. Then more practice walking towards the crate from a distance, and again tossing treats in. You can even use your dog's kibble if they find it rewarding enough - or use your dog's meal to practice this. I also like to put kibble in a Kong or other food interact toy so she has something to keep her busy in there.

What a wonderful site you have. You really have a lot of information on the Standard Poodle. I have bookmarked your site for much information as well as some of the grooming tools that you have.

And you really do have some beautiful Poodles. I have a 13 year old spayed girl that has become ill with cancer. We can't imagine our family without a Standard so I am researching responsible breeders. Needless to say, you are in that category.

Thank you for all the information and being able to see some very fine Standards.

Thank you for a sweet website. Your poodles are just lovely and look fanastic. My love is by my side tonight sleeping and dreaming. Our time is nearing the end as 16 years have went by. When I can after our parting, I will check back in on your beauties and give my heart to another special poodle.

Hi, Enjoyed reading your site. I adopted a six yr Standard. He is 50 lbs and healthy. I am having a hard time knowing how much to feed him. I am attempting a diet mostly of raw/home cooked food.
Sometimes Taste of the Wild kibbles, 2 cups at a time.
Can you shed any light on the proper feeding of my friend.
Thanks,
Mary in Georgia

Hello,

I am not ready for a puppy now, but am planning on one in the next year. I have two dogs, which are both getting older and I dread the day I loose them. I would like to get a new puppy before they are both gone. Now I have a Great Dane, which is the light of my life, she is so amazing, but for our next dog, we have decided to go with a Standard Poodle. I also have a rescue Half english bulldog, half boxer, who is a total character!

I am researching breeders now, thinking, and deciding which color I would like to have, but no deciding probably, the pup will probably pic me.. If you have any info you could pass along to me, that would be great..

Best,
Comora

I love standards. had a male that I owned for 14 years who died in Sept. of old age
and a female that I had for 8 years that died 3 weeks later due to a twisted stomach. We have a minature poodle that we rescued about a month before the others died. She bonded w/ them quickly and is really lonely w/out them. I want to get another standard - possibly a puppy that will be the size of the schnoodle I have now and then grow to full size. I'm also open to getting an older poodle that needs a home. We are lost w/out our Zak and Sascha -

I love them all! I keep thinking i could choose one and then the next one comes up. I think Naomi has a beautiful gait and love the way she keeps her tail up and wagging loving jackie. Can you tell me about her parents. I can see some of these pups must be siblings. Also, most importantly, would you ship to memphis? There is a nonstop from lax but i don't know if you agree to ship.

Interested in a pet quality puppy, standard Black - We had a Standard for 13 years and he passed 2 years ago. Absolutely the best experience ever! We live on 1 1/2 acres in Kenwood amongst grape vineyards. Wonderful life for a dog.

What do you have available?
Thanks in advance

Hi Beth,

Thank you for your kind words about my brushing article. The 2 speed Metro Force Dryer would be a good for you, I believe, since your baby is little and will not have a huge amount of coat to dry. Well done on adopting a Poodle in need.

Have fun!

I TAUGHT FIFI TO STAND ON HER HINDLEGS AND SHE WOULD TWIRL AND PIERRE AND I WOULD WALK AROUND HER. I KNOW HOW DUMB BUT TRINITY PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE. THANKS FOR SHARING!!

Judy,

Thank you for kind words about my videos. I plan to do more of them in the future. I would recommend a short all over clip for summer in Spokane. A # 5 Blade of body and legs (1/4" long) is good. You get even fancier and do a #7 on the body and chest and use a #5 or even #4 on the he legs so that legs don't look so skinny. I like to do a "Terrier Tail" on my Poodles in the summer. That means shaving the tail with the same blade you shave the body. It takes a bit of getting used to, after seeing a pom-pom on your Poodle's tail, but it is cute. You can of course leave a top knot and ears for style. Ears can be cut short at the bottom edge. Make sure though that you know where the ear leather ends before making a cut. I use my fingers as a guide guard to be extra careful here.
A "Continental" clip is very advanced clip that is seen mostly on show Poodles. I will be putting a Poodle Clip Chart up in the near future that will show a variety of clips.
Happy Grooming!
Woof,
Jacki

Hi Celeste,

We have a litter of puppies that will be ready to go to new homes in June. They will be large as adults and have very high potential for doing Rally, agility and outdoor activities. We have black males and females and some brown females. Otis will be bred at some time but probably not in the near future as he needs to get his testing done and also finish his Championship.

HOW DOES THE RAW FOOD DIFFER FROM HOLISTIC FOOD? I;M OLD SCHOOL AND THIS IS NEW TO ME. WOULD THIS DIET DO WELL WHILE ON A HIKE AND CAMP IN THE WOODS PACKING AND WHAT REQUIRMENTS DOES THE RAW MEAT NEED TO STAY FRESH?

IS ANY OF OTTIS BABIES IN THE FUTURE AND WHAT PRICE RANGE ARE WE LOOKING AT. FIRST AND MOST I WANT A COMPANION FOR MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF.
WE PLAN TO RV AND DO SOME BOATING AND FISHING AND KAYAKING, OBEDIENCE, RALLY AND MOST OF DOG THERAPY. IF IT WORKD IT WORKS. BECAUSE OF THIS BIG ORDER THAT A STANDARD POODLE CAN FILL BEING SO UNIVERSAL I THINK IT CAN BE DONE.
MY HUSBAND AND I ARE RETIRED. HE IS A DISABLLED MARINE AND HAD A LOT OF LIFE LEFT IN HIM AND I THINK THE RALLY AND OBEDIENCE AND SAR. WOULD BE GOOD HE WAS A INTERPETER AND SCOUT IN VIETNAM.SO I WAS LOOKING MORE FOR A DOG THAT WOULD MAKE THE CUT. OTHER THAN THAT WE WILL LOVE HIM TO DEATH DO US PART.
NOOT HAVING A DOG FOR SOME YRS I'M NOT ACCULMATED TO THE NEW TRENDS IN THE STANDARD.

ON BOTH SIDES OF OUR DOG WAS THE WYCLIFF HARDIAN AND HE WAS A 28 IN BIG BONED DOG. I THINK THAT THIS SHOULD BE CONTINUED IN MY PLAN BECAUSE OF THE RANCH WE LIVE ON AND THE RECREATION THAT WE WANT TO DO. SO HE WOULD FEEL SAFER KNOWING IN THE CONFORMATION AREAWE WOULD FEEL AT EASE.
IF THIS SOUNDS OUT OF THERE PLEASE SET ME STRAIT. APPRECIATE YOU INPUT. OTIS WHAT IS THE GOING RATE FOR HIS OFFSPRING. THAT YOU COULD DIRECT ME TO THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

I APPRECIATE ANY INPUT YOU HAVE TO OFFER.

THANK YOU celeste

thank you for doing your videos. I have learned so much by just watching you, over and over again.
I hope you make more videos on different techniques of shaving standard poodles/hair cuts; There are so many out there. I have tried several cuts and I think I found one that works, I believe it's a contential?
I'm concerened about summer here in Spokane, WA, where it can get toasty in the summer months. Should I shave him closer on his wool coat, or is he okay to leave it approx 1 1/2 inches in length as it is now? Confused, and still learning, Moses is 2 year old male, and hates it when I groom him.

Thank you for your web site.
Best Wishes
